Dante and Francis: Holy Jesters
Dante and Francis are two saints: one of literature, the other of Christianity. At first glance, they might seem far removed from the buffoonish world of medieval jesters, yet they both share its most authentic spirit. In the first part, Martelli will guide the audience through the labyrinth of the Commedia, among biblical monsters, grotesquely named devils, and daring linguistic inventions, ultimately placing the voice of the Supreme Poet in dialogue with that of the jesters—guardians of a popular, comic, and subversive art.
The second part is dedicated to Saint Francis, who liked to call himself the “jester of God.” His rebellious and visionary figure inspired Dario Fo in the celebrated Lu santo jullare Françesco, where the actor’s body becomes a total instrument of gesture, voice, and imagination. In this perspective, Francis reveals once again his revolutionary and popular force, still capable of speaking today with irony, poetry, and intensity. Martelli thus intertwines the worlds of Dante, Francis, and Fo, highlighting the importance of popular culture in the Italian language and tradition, all enriched by the evocative presence of live music.
